About
Overview
‘Communicating Discovery Science’ was the theme of a science communication symposium held from 18 to 20 November 2024 in the historic town of Stellenbosch, in the Cape Winelands of South Africa.
The symposium aimed to deepen understanding of effective public engagement around Discovery Science, also known as basic or foundational science, by exploring ways to improve the practice of communicating Discovery Science, share insights and create a supportive community for scientists and science communication practitioners focused on basic science.
This symposium was sponsored by The Kavli Foundation, and builds on earlier work of the ‘Science Public Engagement Partnership’ (SciPEP) project, an initiative of The Kavli Foundation and the United States Department of Energy. The Kavli Foundation is dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of humanity. In addition to funding in the field of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience, the Foundation invests in initiatives around science and society, including a focus on ethics, science and the public, as well as public engagement with basic science. Core team members of The Kavli Foundation that helped to steer and shape the 2024 ‘Communication Discovery Science’ symposium in South Africa included Brooke Smith, Keegan Sawyer and Lauren Budenholzer.
JCOM special issue
Leading up to the symposium, a special Journal of Science Communication (JCOM) issue on communicating discovery science was produced. Printed copies of this special issue was distributed during the symposium.
